What Do I Say When Overwhelmed?
Four Gentle Scripts for Sensory Unmasking
Finding the words to explain why you need to step away, put on headphones, or dim the lights can feel like trying to translate a poem into a language you’re still learning.
When we’ve spent a lifetime pushing through, the act of speaking our needs out loud can feel startling, even revolutionary.
If you are navigating a new diagnosis or simply a new season of unmasking, please know that you are not ruining the mood or being difficult. You are simply inviting the people you love to understand the unique tempo your nervous system requires to stay present and connected.
The Language of the Unmasked Heart
I invite you to consider these scripts not as rigid lines to memorise, but as gentle invitations to consider, play around with and make your own (or even save to your phone and read out word for word).
When the Environment is Too Loud
“I’m noticing the sensory input in here is starting to feel a bit heavy for my brain. I’m going to pop my headphones on for a little while so I can stay here with you without hitting a wall. It’s my way of turning down the background noise so I can keep enjoying our time.”
When You Need a Sensory Reset
“My nervous system is sending me a signal that it’s reaching its limit. I’m going to step outside for ten minutes to find some quiet and recalibrate. I’m not leaving the conversation; I’m just giving my brain a chance to catch its breath so I can come back refreshed.”
When Your Coping Battery is Low
“I’m finding that my usual ability to filter things out is a bit lower today. I might be a little quieter than usual, or I might need to skip the next stop on our list. It’s not about the company, it’s just what my energy can hold right now.”
The New Rhythm Explanation
“Since learning more about my neurodivergent brain, I’m realising that small adjustments (like sitting in the corner or wearing my sunglasses) make a huge difference in how I feel afterward. Thank you for being ok with me doing thiings a little differently.”
An Invitation to Reflect
Before you head out, you might take a moment to sit with these questions:
Which friends or family members feel like a 'safe harbour' for my unmasked self?
What is the smallest 'yes' I can give my nervous system today (e.g., bringing my fidget, wearing my 'safe' clothes)?
If I could speak my needs without any fear of judgment, what would my body be asking for right now?
A Gentle Thought: Every time you speak a need, you are teaching the world how to love the real you, not the version of you that is exhausted from trying to fit in.
One of my favourite poems is Wild Geese by Mary Oliver, I think she says it best afterall….
