The Cool Change & Storm Flares
Can barometric pressure changes trigger a POTS flare?
Yes. Rapid drops in barometric pressure (common before Australian storms or cool changes)can affect the pressure in the inner ear and the expansion of blood vessels.
Many POTS patients experience pressure headaches, increased brain fog, and joint pain during these shifts because their nervous system struggles to recalibrate to the external environmental pressure.
The Northground Insight
In some Australian cities, particularly Melbourne or Hobart, you can experience four seasons in one afternoon. Each season requires your Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) to flip a switch.
If you have POTS, that switch is often sticky.
A sudden drop in pressure can feel like your brain is being squeezed or like you’re walking through mud.
Somatic Tip for Pressure Shifts
When a storm is rolling in, go put on your compression garments.
If you don’t have any handy, wrap yourself in a weighted blanket or give yourself firm, grounding "hugs" down your arms and legs.
This provides the brain with proprioceptive input, helping it feel contained and stable even when the atmospheric pressure is shifting.
